This bot runs daily on Wikimedia Commons and creates

Camera location0° 00′ 00″ N, 0° 00′ 00″ E Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo

templates using the data found in the EXIF headers of newly uploaded files. JakobHosp (talk) 20:59, 6 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@JakobHosp: I think User:DschwenBot used to do that. That bot broke down in 2022. I see several topics about that at User talk:Dschwen. I guess it was never replaced? That's a pity. Multichill (talk) 20:26, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JakobHosp: I guess this bot was no longer needed as the Upload Wizard add this based on the EXIF data. I don't know why your Wiki Uploader iOS application v. 1.2.3 does not add the location. Maybe you could consider using an other uplaod method, like Upload Wizard. HenkvD (talk) 12:02, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Such a bot would still be useful. The Upload Wizzard adds coordinates based on EXIF but Wikishootme doesn't. Pere prlpz (talk) 12:42, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I guess it should be two steps:
  1. Identify images that have coordinates in EXIF and tag these with {{GPS EXIF}}
  2. Extract GPS from EXIF, but it in structured data and replace {{GPS EXIF}} with {{Location}}
For finding images we'll probably need different strategies like monitoring recent changes and scanning a database dump.
Mediawiki already extracts EXIF and exposes that in the API so should be possible to do this without having to download all images. Multichill (talk) 17:34, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Works the Upload Wizard under Iphone SE2022 ? V1.2.3 works so nice as it remembers which photos are already uploaded. And i just dont get it becasue on WikiMap - Media with GPS EXIF the photos are nice on the map. Is it possible to extrat the GPS data from this map ? The main problem is i get the data in Mintues and seconds in stead of decimals JakobHosp (talk) 19:43, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I see that in the API the GPS coordinates are decimal. That is excellent as LOCATION needs that. Now it is may be less work than i thought, but autmatically will be less error prone and less work.
{ "name": "GPSLatitude", "value": 43.50926944444444 }, { "name": "GPSLongitude", "value": 16.43755277777778 }, JakobHosp (talk) 19:51, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JakobHosp: made a quick proof of concept to tag files. That seems to work.
Next step is to extract the coordinates. I recall that being a bit more tricky because we also might need to add the heading. Multichill (talk) 21:51, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the work. Would be very nice if it would work again. JakobHosp (talk) 08:16, 9 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Agree, I also hope that the bot that reads the coordinates from the EXIF files can work again. GioviPen GP msg 17:21, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
It is not possible to use parts of the DSchwenBot to get it to work again ? I will try to use the upload wizard as that seems the advice. My iphone SE dropped in to the toilet and it is definitely NOT waterproof as the specifications say. JakobHosp (talk) 07:26, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JakobHosp: probably, but someone else was already working on it, see User_talk:Rkieferbaum#Category:Media_with_GPS_EXIF. For now I just focus on finding the files so the other bot can do the actual extraction.
Sorry to hear about your phone. I hope you were able to recover at least your data. Multichill (talk) 09:56, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

0,0 coords

[edit]

if your bot can tell that the coords are very close to 0,0 like File:(20240727) Nederland 03.jpg it should add {{GPS EXIF ambiguous}} instead. RoyZuo (talk) 17:33, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Would be even better if you don't add invalid coordinates in the EXIF. First step is to tag with {{GPS EXIF}}. Some bot will later replace it with {{GPS EXIF ambiguous}}. Multichill (talk) 08:19, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
it comes with cameras, when they sometimes malfunction, not what i or most lay users can control or pay attention to. duh? RoyZuo (talk) 18:42, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's also common with files from GLAM sources (example I just noted). It would be best if files with 0,0 coordinates could be tagged with {{GPS EXIF ambiguous}} with one bot run rather than multiple. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:45, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

GPS EXIF should not be added when location withheld

[edit]

{{GPS EXIF}} should probably not be added if an image is in Category:Location withheld. Sam Wilson 06:04, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Probably? Currently an empty set. Your remark seems to be missing some context. Multichill (talk) 08:47, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Multichill: Sorry, I was sort of trying to avoid linking directly to them, but it doesn't really matter. :) These two (incorrectly; I'll fix that) don't use the template: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=File%3A+incategory%3ALocation_withheld+hastemplate%3AGPS_EXIF&title=Special%3AMediaSearch&type=image (although they should, and their coords should also be removed from the Exif I guess). Sam Wilson 10:28, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Samwilson: ah, some files not using the template. Switched these and some other files to use {{Location withheld}} and added {{Image template notice}} to the category. That should keep the bots away. Multichill (talk) 20:05, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Could i convince you to get your bot to add cosplay of (P13593) and Facebook image ID (P13654) to files? I have an idea as to how the bot could detect the correct items and values to use Trade (talk) 00:06, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Weirdly read coordinates

[edit]

Hello,

what happened here: Special:Diff/1065362490/1065387312? As far as I can tell, the EXIF in File:Nebelung-Katze in Kratzbaumhöhle.jpg show other data than those that your bot wrote. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 07:08, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Grand-Duc: you should ask the uploader why the EXIF is different than the wikitext. The bot doesn't use the exif at all, it uses the wikitext and that contains {{Location|-80|115.773353|heading:306.95989974937345}}. Multichill (talk) 08:27, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I thought that your bot read the location data from the EXIF. I know that there's this kind of tool around, as I happened to upload photos with locations in EXIF where a bot (don't recall its name, though) came and put them into the description. I removed the erroneous data in {{Location}} - they pointed to the Antarctic, that's obviously senseless. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:52, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Grand-Duc: no, only wikitext. The bot that was extracting it from EXIF broke down. I've started tagging files with {{GPS EXIF}} (filling up Category:Media with GPS EXIF) to get the missing coordinates added. See also several previous topics. Multichill (talk) 09:03, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ah, indeed. Thanks for the explanation! :-) Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 09:05, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

hello, writing here to avoid another topic since is related. can I ask you why your bot (that was extracting coordinates from EXIF) broke down? is there a way to implement it again? can I do it somehow (ofc not manually as I did for some of my files)? now in that category there are more than 300k files and it's still increasing... GioviPen GP msg 17:16, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@GiovanniPen: My bot didn't break down. User:DschwenBot broke down, see User_talk:Dschwen#'GPS_EXIF'-tagged_images_haven't_been_processed_for_>24_hrs.
We had three years of backlog and my bot finished tagging those with {{GPS EXIF}} so I don't think it will increase a lot. The last ones are in Category:GPS EXIF candidates (review needed).
I just focused on first getting these files tagged, next step is to extract coordinates, see also User_talk:Rkieferbaum#Category:Media_with_GPS_EXIF. Multichill (talk) 21:06, 8 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
oh ok ty. was that one the only one doing the location job (besides Rkieferbaum's one)? GioviPen GP msg 17:04, 10 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

GeographBot re-creating deleted files

[edit]

Hi Multichill, first of all thank you for creating and/or maintaining GeographBot, it's too bad the Geograph project seems a little stale but it's great that Commons is able to back up a lot of that important content. But anyway, I recently DR'd a few Geograph images due to UK FOP issues at Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Graffiti on walls in London, but see that today the bot re-created a few of them (e.g. File:Graffiti - geograph.org.uk - 2825750.jpg). Is the bot able to check if a file's deleted and if so, not re-create it? Thanks, -Consigned (talk) 09:44, 15 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Consigned: I have Commons:Geograph Britain and Ireland/Deleted files to prevent the bot from uploading files that have been deleted before. The bot loads the list and puts the id's on a skip list. The files you mention were recently deleted so not on the list yet, now updated. So a bit of a mid-air collision. I deleted the files. Multichill (talk) 19:42, 15 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Great, thank you. -Consigned (talk) 22:49, 15 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Category discussion warning

Source categories (flat list) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

BotMultichill adding SDC

[edit]

I see that BotMultichill is adding SDC inception to files. Where was this bot task approved? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:27, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Pi.1415926535: been doing that for years, bot was approved and flagged back in 2007. What's the problem? Multichill (talk) 22:00, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Commons:Bots/Requests/BotMultichill is only for a task of transferring images from nlwiki. You need community approval for each new task. (Per COM:BOTS: Bots must not be used to carry out different tasks for which permission has not been granted. Please stop the bot until you have received approval for this task. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:27, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Pi.1415926535: aren't we a bit bureaucratic here? I can do that too, bot was approved under this policy. So no, I'm not stopping it.
If there is something in need of fixing, please tell me. Otherwise, move on. Multichill (talk) 22:37, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I had a look to be sure, the bot is just emptying out the backlog in Category:Taken on missing SDC inception. It had over 400.000 entries so it might take some time to clear. Multichill (talk) 22:53, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
You did not give the community any chance to weigh in about these tasks for two bots (including BotMultichillT) that are making millions of edits. It is not being bureaucratic to insist on that simple step, which has been listed on that page since 2009, long before you started any SDC tasks with the bots. Telling me to "move on" for asking you to follow a community norm is not helpful. I have blocked BotMultichill and BotMultichillT per Commons:Bots#Blocking of bots and opened a discussion here. Advies template update

[edit]

Hi Multichill.

Peli (talk) 15:03, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
