A very sad story. As for our search for my great-grandfather’s house, we weren’t successful in finding it but we did have a few adventures along the way: https://uncorneredmarket.com/the-search-for-grandfathers-house-part-two/

We recently visited Kunming in China where my grandfather spent some time during WWII. It’s amazing to think he had been in the same city sixty years before.

We will be updating the website more frequently this summer with more stories and photos from China and the rest of Asia, so check back often!

Stam years ago. After seeing some of your photographs on
Flickr and then stumbling onto this, well, I feel like I’ve found a
pot of gold. Thanks so much.

I had to take a crash course on Chinese history to keep up with my family’s comings and goings!

We’ll be in Qingdao next week to start the search for the house. I’ll be sure to write more about whether we’re able to find the infamous house and how Qingdao looks and feels these days. Looking forward to playing detective!

Suzanne, I’m with you on the svarak! We started getting a little nostalgic for the European Christmas spirit.

Wow, what a story! Good luck in locating the house, and I’m looking forward to the next update!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to both of you! I’m wishing I was wandering Prague’s Christmas market with a plastic cup of svarak. 🙂

On a lighter note, it reminds me of one of my favorite Monty Python jokes–when John Cleese, playing a boarding school teacher, addresses the students in the chapel and reminds them that “Next week is Empire Day, when we commemorate all who lost their lives trying to keep China British.”

Good luck!
