Shane, thanks so much for your kind words and thoughtful comment. It really means a lot, as I know how you know this issue.

This visit to Australia and trying to learn about Aboriginal culture and history made me realize how little I know about my own country’s indigenous people. It’s actually kind of embarrassing, and something I wand to change. I’m more aware than ever of how educational systems often present a partial history, but I do hope that this will eventually change over time with people like Elder Ernie working with the Australian government on new curriculum that covers this.

The connection to the land is something that came up in our discussions, but it really hit home to me when reading “Song Lines” and then visiting Alice Springs. Something clicked, and I agree that without understanding that vital need then it will be hard for there to be any significant change.

If you like street art, be sure to check out the post we did dedicated solely to Melbourne’s street art: https://uncorneredmarket.com/melbourne-street-art/

I do think that more travelers to Australia are learning about aboriginal culture as the tourism board is investing a lot in these sorts of experiences. I also hope, however, that they gain a greater understanding of the history and socio-economic situation to get greater context on the present.

It’s really sad what’s happening to them. You did a really great job of describing what has happened and in educating the general public.

The connection to land is a vital part of every Australian Aborigine, something that many “white fellas” don’t understand. I have driven around Australia and can attest to this line in your post, “Displace a people, introduce a substance they aren’t biologically well equipped to metabolize (alcohol), deteriorate their social structure, and you’ve executed a perfect recipe for societal decay.” Without a significant change of attitude from all Australians, this societal decay will tragically remain..

Hopefully, more travelers to Australia are learning about aboriginal culture.

Australia is certainly not a budget travel destination. I’d shop around for campervans or use a comparison service. For example, we found Lucky Rentals to be cheaper than Hippie Vans for Western Australia. Also, remember that campervan parks usually charge $30+ per night, so it’s not entirely free accommodation. But, the campervans do provide lots of flexibility.

Laurel and I are trying really hard to find a way to visit AU but the prices are so high and we are on a fixed income. We have been thinking about a Hippie Van rental to avoid the hotel fees.
